What is suede?
The term suede comes from the French gants de Suède, which literally means "gloves from Sweden. Suede is a type of leather with a napped finish made from the underside of the animal skin; softer and less durable than leather, it’s important to protect and look after it.
The importance of proper suede shoe care
It is important to treat unfinished suede to make it more supple and resistant to scratches. After cleaning your suede shoes, use a soft cloth or brush to apply a suede conditioner. Apply it in straight motions but in ferent directions to evenly distribute the conditioner over the shoe.
How to clean suede shoes
Remove any dirt or dust in straight motions, ensuring not to ‘push the dirt’ into the suede texture. Use a natural, non-abrasive brush to clean suede boots or shoes working it to follow the direction of the suede’s grain.
How often should I clean suede shoes?
The general advice is to clean your suede shoes about once a month to prevent a build-up of scuffs and dirt. But naturally, that depends on how often you wear them. Some people also recommend applying a protective waterproof spray to them each time, but only AFTER they’ve been cleaned.
Essential tools & supplies for suede shoe care
We recommend using a specialist suede brush. For lightly damaged suede, we suggest investing in a revival spray or suede shampoo (and make sure to read the label first). To protect your suede straight from unboxing, invest a high-quality protector spray. We recommend using this once a year.
How to store suede shoes
As well as regularly cleaning and treating your suede shoes, how you store them is also important. They should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent the colour from fading, and they should also be kept away from heat, such as radiators.
